The Presidents Proposal to Keep Tuition Down

By Karolyn Castaldo on February 1, 2012

Whether you follow politics or not, this is something you really need to hear. Last week, during his State of the Union Address, President Obama gave an ultimatum to the university’s of the United States: Either lower the overall tuition or lose federal aid to your University.

As we all know, tuition prices are getting ridiculous. When I tell people from older generations what I am paying for college, they are astonished as to why and how the prices could have raised so much since they had been at school. Regardless of if you pay full price, get scholarships, have a financial aid package of some sort or have a student loan, it is still an expensive endeavor, which often keeps many people from attaining higher education at the college of their dreams. I cannot even count on both hands how many people that I know personally who had the grades and the character to get into some of the higher priced schools, but could not afford it, and ended up somewhere with a lesser program or reputation.

Not only has he addressed the presidents of each college with this proposition, but he is asking congress to keep interest rates down on student loans so that graduates are not in more debt that they can handle, especially in the current economy where finding a job that meets their newly acquired qualifications is nearly impossible for some.

Another aspect of this proposal is the need for more work-study jobs on campus to be available to students who need them. Work-study is a great opportunity because unlike off-campus jobs, they work with your class schedule so that you are able to further your education, while also earning the money you need during school.

Some may think this is an insane ploy to get the votes of the college-age student and their parents in the upcoming election. I would hope that even if Obama does not get elected again, the new president will take it as his duty to future generations to try to make this proposal a reality. With this type of legislation, more middle-class americans could go to college, giving a great opportunity to more people.
